What is a patent?
What is a patent?
Patents give the patent holder exclusive rights to an
invention for a specified amount of time. During the life of the patent,
others may not legally manufacture, sell, or use your patented invention
without your authorization. Like any other piece of property, patents
can be sold, rented (licensed), or given to another person. If you have
an idea for an invention that you would like to develop or market, you
may want to obtain patent protection for your idea before you disclose
it to anyone. Without patent protection, manufacturers or venture capitalists
could sell your invention without giving you any of the profits, even
if they have told you they are not interested in your invention.
